How the mix is worked out
How many tanks will the job take?
The area divided by what one full tank covers. 9,000 sq ft with a tank that covers 3,000 sq ft is 3 full tanks. 10,000 sq ft would be 3 full tanks and a partial at 33%, and the partial gets 33% of every full-tank amount.
How much area does one tank cover?
Your mulch decides it. Divide the gallons in your tank by the gallons of water each bale of mulch takes (the bag or the maker's chart says, often about 100 to 125 gallons per 50 lb bale). That's how many bales go in a tank. Then bales × 50 lb ÷ your mulch rate per 1,000 sq ft × 1,000. Example: 300 gallons ÷ 100 = 3 bales, or 150 lb. At 50 lb per 1,000 sq ft, that tank covers 3,000 sq ft.
My rates are per acre. How do I change them?
Divide by 43.56 to get pounds per 1,000 sq ft (an acre is 43,560 sq ft). 2,000 lb of mulch per acre is about 46 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Do the same for seed and fertilizer.
How much seed and fertilizer should I use?
Use the rate on your seed mix's tag and your fertilizer's bag, since they change with the mix and where you are. The calculator starts at 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft for each, the same starting rate CrewBarrow uses, so change them to yours.
Why doesn't the whole job match the tanks exactly?
You buy whole bags and bales, so the Whole job column rounds up to full 50 lb bags. The Each full tank column is the exact amount to load.
